FAQ

What is AVIF and why can't many systems open it?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a next-generation image format based on the AV1 video codec, offering roughly 20% better compression than WebP — currently the most compression-efficient image format available. However, it was only finalized in 2019 and currently only supported in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, and Safari 16+. Older devices, legacy software, and Microsoft Office don't support it yet, which is why downloaded AVIF images often fail to open.

Will converting AVIF to JPG reduce image quality?

Some re-compression loss is expected since JPG is lossy. This tool uses a high 0.92 quality parameter for encoding, making the difference nearly invisible for everyday viewing, sharing, and printing (non-professional). For scenarios requiring absolute fidelity, keep the original AVIF files.

What happens to AVIF transparent backgrounds when converting to JPG?

JPG doesn't support transparency. During conversion, transparent areas are automatically filled with solid white. If you need to preserve transparency, use the [AVIF to PNG](/image/avif-to-png/) tool instead.

Are AVIF images uploaded to a server? Is it private?

No uploads. All conversion happens locally in your browser via Web Workers. Your image files are never sent to any external server or stored in the cloud. Processing personal photos and sensitive images is completely safe.

Is animated AVIF supported?

Animated AVIF (AVIF animation) is converted by extracting the first frame as a static JPG image, since JPG itself doesn't support animation. If you need to preserve animation, convert to GIF or WebP animation format via the [main converter](/image/convert/).

Is 10-bit HDR AVIF supported?

Yes, AVIF files that the browser can correctly decode are all supported. Note that JPG is an 8-bit format, so HDR content is tone-mapped to standard SDR output.

Is batch conversion supported?

Currently one AVIF image is processed at a time for browser-side processing stability. Process files one by one for multiple conversions. Batch functionality may be added in future versions.

Is it normal for the JPG file to be much larger than AVIF after conversion?
