Some re-compression loss is expected since this tool uses lossy WebP encoding (at quality 0.92). For everyday viewing and sharing, the difference is nearly invisible. If you need complete losslessness, convert to PNG format instead.

What advantages does WebP have over converting to JPG?

At equivalent quality, WebP files are 25-35% smaller than JPG, and WebP supports transparent backgrounds (which JPG doesn't). Modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari 14+) all support WebP, making it the optimal choice for web and app use. Are HEIC photos uploaded to a server?

Absolutely no uploads. This tool uses the heic2any library to decode HEIC locally in the browser, then encodes to WebP via Web Workers. Your photos stay on your device the entire time and are never sent to any external server. Processing private photos is completely safe.

Can Windows open WebP?

Windows 10 version 1809 and later have built-in WebP support in the Photos app. For older Windows versions, you can open WebP files directly in Chrome or Edge browsers, or install the WebP extension. If the recipient's environment is uncertain, converting to JPG is the safer option.

Will transparent backgrounds be preserved?

Yes, fully preserved. WebP format supports alpha transparency channels — transparent areas in HEIC are converted correctly with no white or black fill.

Are Live Photos supported?

The static HEIC image portion of Live Photos can be converted, but the dynamic video portion will not be converted. If you only need the still photo, it works perfectly.

Is batch conversion supported?

Currently one HEIC photo is processed at a time for browser-side processing stability. Process photos one by one for multiple conversions. Batch functionality may be added in future versions.

Can I still edit WebP files after converting?

Recent versions of Photoshop, GIMP, and other editors support WebP editing. However, if you plan to edit and save repeatedly, converting to PNG first is recommended to avoid quality degradation from multiple lossy compression saves. Export to WebP after editing is complete.
